JM Chris Chang

JM Chris Chang received his PhD from Columbia University in 2018.  His research focuses on the culture of bureaucratic paperwork and file-keeping in China during the Mao era.  His current project is a history of the socialist dossier system, the central filing system used to document the lives of Chinese subjects. Utilizing deaccessioned dossiers, his research examines bureaucratic approaches to issues of information, local justice, and the archive. His research has received support from the Social Science Research Council and the ACLS/Mellon Foundation.
